The sorting machine is for flowers and similar items, and comprises a box with a row of sorting compartments (1) varying in length, the flowers being placed in them according to stem length. Each compartment has an electrical circuit with a counter recording the number of flowers in it, together with a contact (8) depressed each time one is inserted. This controls a switch closing the circuit, thus actuating the counter. The length of each compartment can be varied by means of an adjustable bulkhead (3) set to the desired position in it. It can be open at the front, the contact being at the opposite end and above the compartment floor.
