This invention relates to the field of circulation of fluids through open and closed systems. A major shortcoming of the use of a cotton plug in a sterile shake flask is the very slow rate of gas exchange through the cotton plug. Consequently, the gas exchange through the cotton plug is rate limiting rather than the biological process in the bacteriological medium. Elaborate sterile gas pumping systems have been developed and used to increase the rate of air through put. However, such systems are quite expensive, difficult to operate and maintain and provide a source of possible contamination. The present invention provides an improved circulation system which comprises a microporous member (110) which is simple to use, inexpensive to maintain, and yet effective to cause the flow of certain fluids therethrough. When the microporous me member (110) is installed in a conduit (171), chamber (180) or other container and the said conduit (171), chamber (180) or other container is filled with certain fluids, the microporous member (110) will urge the said fluid to flow through the conduit (171), chamber (180) or other container.
|
