PURPOSE:To facilitate selection and design of a constituent material for a recovery device and enable recovery of iodine in high yield by adsorbing iodine liberated by utilizing reductive and oxidative reactions on a strong basic anion exchange resin. CONSTITUTION:An organic iodine compound, especially a roentgenographic contrast medium, such as diatrizoic acid, or industrial germicide, such as tolyldiiodomethylsulfonic acid, is produced. An organic iodine compound generated in a waste liquor produced in the store-mentioned process is reduced and deiodinated. Catalytic hydrogenolysis reaction, reductive reaction with metallic zinc, tin, aluminum or iron, under acidic conditions, or electrolytic reductive reaction, etc., is used as the abovementioned reductive reaction. An oxidizing agent, such as a solution of sodium hypochlorite, is then added to the resultant product to liberate iodine. The obtained free iodine is subsequently adsorbed on a strong basic anion exchange resin (e.g., 'Amberlite IRA-400(R)') to recover the iodine. |
