FIELD: production of metallic magnesium. SUBSTANCE: magnesium oxide or corresponding precursor of magnesium oxide may be dissolved in molten salt bath containing cations of magnesium, cations of rare-earth element and fluoride anions, and obtained bath containing magnesium is subjected to electrolysis to produce alloy of magnesium and rare-earth element or metallic magnesium. Despite the fact that alloy of magnesium and rare-earth element is precious by itself, a method is offered to produce magnesium from the alloy by successive electrolysis of melt containing fluoride anions and then, melt containing chloride anions.
