A bucket-wheel excavator is disclosed having a hydraulic bucketwheel drive, a hydraulic drive for swinging the superstructure hydraulic belt drives, the hydraulic drives consisting of hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors, the swinging drive hydraulic pump being adjustable, and a control unit used for adjusting the swept volume of the hydraulic pump used to swing the superstructure. The control unit for the swing drive is governed by the pressure of the hydraulic bucket-wheel drive and by the pressure of the hydraulic belt drives in such a manner that the rate of swing is reduced as these pressures increase and vice-versa.
