The cylindrical outer sleeve of the gas spring which acts as the inner telescopic tube and slides in the telescopic outer tube (1) is provided with an opening (13) which takes the release rod (11, 12) which actuates the valve ram to adjust the height. The actuating lever is directly integrated in the chair column. The release rod preferably comprises a release cam inserted in the outer sleeve of the gas spring, and an actuating lever which passes through the opening and is screwed into the cam.
