Rh catalyst for the prodn. of acetic acid, ethanol, acetaldehyde and opt. sec. prods. by the reaction of CO with H2 consists of a Rh salt or complex in a valency state below 3, halide (Cl) ions and, as cocatalyst, Mg in the form of salts or complex cpds., on a support. The cocatalysts improve the activity and/or selectivity and hence the economy of the process.
