Spaced holding units are positioned on opposite sides of the shaft inserted into the hole in the halved dowel plug being pulled out of a railway track sleeper. These can grip the halves, detach them from their surroundings and clamp them. The holding units (9, 9') are connected to the upper part (8') of the shaft, so as to be movable, and able to swivel relative to the shaft (8) axis, and are fixable by means of a detachable locking device. This can be a blocking unit (12) swinging into their path on the shaft.
