Plastics sections 1,2 of thermoplastic material are welded together by contact heating of the surfaces to be joined and then pressing these surfaces together whilst using metal elements which are pressed flat onto adjacent outer surfaces of the sections and which have opposed edges spaced apart by a narrow gap and shaped at 11,12 to produce a shaped weld reinforcement having opposite rising surfaces.
