A water treatment and storage unit comprises a water tank 2 supported by a column 1 consisting of superimposed settling and filtration tanks 3,6. A preferred unit has a single column 1 consisting of a plurality of settling tanks 3 above a single filtration tank 6, the tanks having a common peripheral wall 7 which bears the weight of the water tank 2 and the base of one tank serving as the cover of the tank below. Rain water is supplied by pump 9 to the settling tanks 3 which operate in parallel, water therefrom being fed through valved pipes 25, 31, 32 to the upper portion of filtration tank 6. The water descends through a particulate filtering medium 33 and is then fed to the upper portion of water tank 2 through valved pipes 35, 36, 37. The medium 33 may be backwashed with water from tank 2, air being injected by venturi 48. Each tank may have a base whose axial cross section is an inverted W.
