WINDOW SASH CONSTRUCTION

An improved method of interconnecting the frame or rail members of a sash. In the case of conventional horizontally sliding sashes, each sash member comprises an upper and a lower rail member, a pair of side rail members. Ends of the upper and lower rail members are inserted into the ends of the supporting channels of the side rail members, and are retained therein by means of self-threading screws. The present invention eliminates the use of screws as fasteners for retaining the rail members of the sash in assembly. The improved joint construction comprises a first rail member and second rail member, the former having a pair of spaced-apart parallel outer walls interconnected by a web portion extending the length thereof. The inner portions of the outer walls together with the web define a sash glass supporting channel extending along a length of the first rail member, the web having a protuberance extending inwardly into the channel. The second rail member has spaced-apart parallel outer walls interconnected by a Cshaped web portion defining an arcuate expandable socket. A cut-out portion is defined by an area in which indentical wall portions of both outer walls of the second rail member have been removed. Parallel edges of the cut-out portion, which are spaced apart a distance corresponding to a distance between the outer surfaces of a pair of inwardly directed projections situated on inner surfaces of outer walls of the first rail member, frictionally engage the outer surfaces of the pair of spaced-apart projections of the first rail member as the second rail member is slid into tight engagement with the first rail member, and the lower end of the arcuate expandable socket engages a protuberance in the web of the sash glass supporting channel of the first rail member, whereby the first and second rail members are retained in locked assembly.
