The electric motor having a flat commutator (5) whose contact surface (6) (which lies in a radial plane) is made contact with by brushes which are pressed against it in the axial direction is provided with a compressed-air cooling line (9) which is directed onto the commutator contact surface. The outlet opening (8) of the cooling-air line rests on the commutator, with respect to the contact region of the brushes, in such a manner that the air jet provides an optimum cooling effect by acting on this region, which is particularly highly stressed by friction and contact losses. The said cooling-air line (9) branches off a main compressed-air line (15) which ends in the vicinity of that end of the rotor winding which is remote from the commutator and from which the cooling air flows back via the gap between the rotor (3) and the stator (2) and is furthermore used for additional cooling of the commutator and of the motor bearing (11) on the commutator side. The two cooling-air lines (9, 15) enable optimum cooling of the active parts of the electric motor. <IMAGE>
