In the process, a stream of the gas containing the fine particles is passed through a venturi tube. A scrubbing liquid is sprayed into the venturi tube upstream of the narrow point thereof and/or into the narrow point thereof. The pressure drop of the gas over the venturi tube, the velocity of the gas in the smallest flow cross-section of the venturi tube and also the ratio of the scrubbing liquid volume fed to the venturi tube per unit time, to the gas volume fed to the venturi tube per unit time are each kept constant within about 20%. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a nozzle (10) which ends upstream of the narrow point (8) of the venturi tube, a first, axially movable displacement body (18) defining the effective outlet cross-section of the nozzle (10), and/or an axially movable second displacement body (20) which is arranged upstream of the nozzle and downstream of the narrow point of the venturi tube and which defines the smallest flow cross-section of the venturi tube (6). <IMAGE>
