The suspension system has the cable looped through a series of runners sliding along a support track such that the loops do not become tangled and no links are formed in the cable. Each runner has an eye (7) projecting from below. The cable (1) is clamped in retention shoes (10, 11) attached to a second eye (8) looped through the first eye. The second eye plus its shoes-and therefore the cable itself-may pivot about a vertical axis between two end positions. In the first end position the cable in the shoes lies along the direction of runner movement and in the second it is at right angles to this direction.
