The method involves producing a time-frequency-noise amplitude graph containing. the ignition process, normal burner operation, addition of further burner stages if appropriate and/or continuous regulation for an optimally adjusted burner system. A frequency-noise amplitude graph is produced during normal operation from acoustic monitoring (5,6) signals. An evaluation unit (15) monitors for coincidence within a certain bandwidth between the initial and operating data using time correlation and indicates a fault if the bandwidth is exceeded.
