The machine loads and unloads rolls etc. of material through which holder bars have been passed into and from supporting bearings, e.g. ont he truck of a machine laying the material. It has a air of guide struts, spaced apart for the same distance as these bearings, and along each of which a chain runs, equipped with a hook engaging with the protruding bar end. Each hook assembly has a supporting member (11) fixed to the chain, protruding clear of its path, the protruding portion incorporating the hook proper (5), which is open in the travel direction and a locking member (12) securing the bar end (6a) in the hook. When the supporting member reaches the transfer position, with the hook opening to the top, the locking member disengages.
