Chloro:benzamide-ethyl-phenoxy-methyl-propionic acid cpd. prepn. - from chlorobenzoyl-tyramine, acetone and chloroform

Prodn. of 2- 4-(4-chlorobenzamidoethyl)phenoxy -2-methylpropionic acid of formula (I): is carried out by reacting 1 mole of N-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-tyramine (II) with 20-100 moles of acetone and 2-10(pref. 3-6) moles of CHCl3 at 10-40 degrees C (pref. 15-30 degrees C) in the presence of 3-4 (pref. 3.2-3.5) moles of alkali per mole of CHCl3. (I) is a hypolipaemic and hypocholesterdaemic agent. The process gives his yields (e.g. 86-92%) at low treaction temps. without the problems associated with the use of alpha-bromoisobutyric acid (cf. DT 2149090).
