Composite insulator has a pref. coated, glass-fibre-reinforced, plastics rod as a core onto which several suitably drill-holed screens and >=1 insulating body at the end(s) of the stack of screens are fitted. Screens and insulating body (bodies) are mounted on the plastics rod. with pretension achieved with the aid of rings. One such ring is fitted between any 2 adjacent screens and/or insulating body and rod. Several rings may be mounted between adjacent screens. The plastics used for the rod may be an unsatd. polyester or a (cycloaliphatic or aromatic) epoxy. The screens are pref. of PTFE, PVF, PVdF, or polytrichlorofluoroethylene.
