The tabletop, chair seat etc. can be infinitely adjusted in height by a lift mechanism comprising a pressure-filled housing (1) with a piston rod (8) at one end and a valve at the other which is actuated by an axially movable release pin (22) which is operated by an operating lever (31) which is designed as a swivel lever and is connected to the pin by a suitable mechanism which translates swivel motion into a displacement. For example a slide body (24) is connected secure against rotation to the swivel lever and is fitted on its outer perimeter with a thread (25) which engages in a corresponding locally fixed counter thread. Since the swivel lever moves about the longitudinal axis it can be concealed beneath the seat.
