Reconditioning double glazing - by drilling holes in spacer, venting and filling with fresh gas

Insulating double glazing, in which the gap between the panes is filled by a gas with a lower conductivity for heat and sound than air can deteriorate after some years when leakage losses have occurred. An appliance has been designed which can be clamped to the panes by suction cups and carries a drilling head. One or two holes are drilled in the spacer between the panes or in the margin of one of the panes and the air gap is vented; fresh gas is then filled in and the holes are sealed hermetically. Double glazing can thus be reconditioned many times; it saves having to replace complete leaky double glazing panels by new ones.
