At one end of the wad, the fibres strands etc. of the absorbent material are secured together around the axis of the cylinder, at the other end of the wad, the fibres, strands etc. are constrained to diverge symmetrically around the axis of the cylinder. The wad is compressed radially all round towards the axis and then bound circumferentially with a narrow annular band of inextensible material which serves as a boundary between two axially extending sections of the wad. The tampon takes up a distinctive form when in use i.e. the inner section having the end with divergent fibres now diverges in a coned funnel shape from the annular band the outer section having the end with fixed fibres becomes ovoid in shape with major dia. greater than that of the original cylindrical wad. The shape taken up by the tampon when soaked ensures comfort for the user, it conforms closely to anatomical contours so that local pressures are minimised. Absorption capacity is maximised for the material used. The tampon is reasurringly secure but remains easy to extract.
|
