A chair having a seat column (3) features an arrangement for such an attachment of the lower end portion of said column in a downwardly tapering socket hole (4') in a base (4) that the height of the column may be preselected, when the column is wedged to the base in assembling the chair. The preselection is made possible by using at least one separate wedge member (11) which at the driving in of the column (3) into the socket hole (4') of the base (4) is retained in one of at least two axially spaced operative positions relative to the column defined by surface irregularities (8, 9, 10) on or in the circumferential surface of the column engaging with the wedge member.

|
