Tert amines from carbonyl cpds. - by reaction with formamides in the presence of water or alcohol

Tert. amines are prepd. by reacting a carbonyl cpd. (I) with a formyl deriv. (II) of a sec. amine at 100-350 degrees C in the presence of H2O and/or a lower alcohol. The prods. can be used as pharmaceutical intermediates, and their quat. salts can be used as antibacterials, dyeing aids, antistatic agents and fabric softeners. The process gives high yields (e.g. 92-99% conversion and 100% selectivity based on the carbonyl cpd.) with only a minor amt. (e.g. 1-45%)of decompsn. of (II).
