A composition for inhibiting the growth of bacteria in culture media for the cultivation of fungi and yeasts, and the use of this composition for obtaining yeasts or fungi, especially moulds, are described. The said composition contains at least one sugar as well as a compound derived either from paraquinone or from a hemiquinone. However, it can also contain a glycoside of a compound derived from paraquinone or from a hemiquinone. The said compounds can be of synthetic origin, but it is also possible to use compounds which occur in natural products and are in virtually pure form or as crude extracts. Culture media which contain the said composition display great advantages, inter alia in respect of the adjustment of the pH, a distinct coloration of the medium, in respect of the isolation and identification of the fungi and yeasts.
