In order to recover biological trace compounds from fresh human or animal urine - e.g. for subsequent medical use - an adsorbent 21 is removably held within a filter chamber 20 which is connected in a flow passage 18, 22 between a urinal outlet 14 and a holding tank or sewer 24. The required biological trace compounds, which are absorbed from the urine into the adsorbant 21, are then obtained from the removed adsorbant using conventional chemical processes. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the flow passage has first and second adsorbant chambers (210, 220) connected in series, with an interposed buffer chamber (216) to adjust the pH of the urine. <IMAGE> |
