A sealant compsn. comprises (A) a monomer mixt.; (B) an alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium perchlorate or persulphate; (C) 0.03-1 wt. pt. a N-Nitroso-amine per 100 wt. pts. (A); (D) an accelerator; and (E) a quinone-type polymerisation inhibitor. (A) includes (1) where R is H, 1-4C alkyl or hydroxy-alkyl, or -ch2ococ(r')=CH2; R' is H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; R2 is H, 1-4C alkyl, OH or -OCOC(R')=CH2; r, m and n >=1; and p is 0 or 1; and (2) >=15 wt.% -C=CH2, where R3 is Me, Et, CO2H or H; R4 is H, Me or Et; R5 is H, Me or OH; R6 is H, Cl, Me or Et; and q = 0-8. Compsn. has low toxicity and an extended shelf life in the presence of air, but polymerises upon exclusion of air. It can be used with stainless steel and other passive metal surfaces as well as with ordinary steel to provide a relatively high strength bond, without promoting corrosion. |
