PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:A glass tube and a glass rod are arranged so that the center axes are made to coincide with each other and the gap between them are filled with a glass of low referactive index and the solid parent material is spun into optical fibers with large diameter and high roundness in cross section. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass tube 21 and a quartz glass rod of low light loss 22 are arranged so that their center axes are made to coincide with each other and the gap between them is filled with a powder 23 of glass having a refractive index lower than that of quartz glass as SiO2-B2O3 glass. Then, they are heated with heater 24 and molten to form a solid and integrated parent material, which is in turn spun into optical fibers 26 and wound up on drum 27. The optical fibers have high roundness and the fiber yield is high.
