PURPOSE:To obtain phenol in high yield without using a corrosion-resistant decomposition reactor, by decomposing 1-phenylethyl hydroperoxide in the presence of a novel catalyst of a dialkylthiuram disulfied. CONSTITUTION:1-Phenylethyl hydroperoxide and a dialkylthiuram disulfide catalyst are dissolved in a suitable solvent, and decomposed at 50-200 deg.C, preferably 80-120 deg.C, to give phenol. Dimethylthiuram disulfide, diethylthiuram disulfide, etc. may be cited as the catalyst, and the amount is 0.00001-0.1 mole, preferably 0.0001-0.01 mole per mole of the raw material.
