The detachable towing hook for a car has a shaft with a profiled end (2) which locates in a profiled recess in the support plate secured on the chassis. The recess is flanked by side supports (6, 7) through which a locating bar (9) is pushed to secure the towing hook shaft through a matching hole in the shaft. The securing bar is turned by a hand lever (10) to provide an eccentric drive to push the towing hook shaft into the recess and provide a firm support. When not in use the hook is easily removed and stored in the boot or tool box.
