The tensioning wheel consists of a hub with two or more segmental arms that place the cord attached to the tuning pointer under tension. The arms are shaped so that their natural springiness produces the tension in the cord. Each arm is attached at its broad base to the hub and its narrow outer end has a support piece with a semicircular groove in which the cord sits. The base of each arm has an end-stop against which the outer end of the other arm comes to rest when the cord is placed under tension. This end of the arm slides along the end-stop until a second end-stop is reached which stops the sliding movement.
