A mechanism for triggering a rapid discharge of a pebble bed reactor (high temp. reactor) consists of fracturing a glass support dome by a projectile, so that the fuel spheres supported by the dome are free to fall out of the reactor. The glass dome is pref. designed to support both the load of the fuel spheres above it and also the gas pressure in the reactor. As an alternative, other notching mechanisms may be used for fracturing the glass. Complicated mechanisms incorporating valves are rendered unnecessary and the maintenance times during shutdown are consequently reduced.
|
