Modifying the wetting properties of solid surfaces - by treatment with a modifier which grafts to the surface by covalent bonds

The wetting properties of solids and solid surfaces are modified by treatment with an organic cpd. R-X or R-T-X (where R is a gp. which determines the wetting properties, generally a long chain gp.; X is >=1 reactive functional gp.; and T is a carrier gp.). The solid (surface) to be treated contains (or is provided with) surface gps. which react with X to form covalent bonds. The process gives durable treatment of a wide range of substrates, such as polymers, carbon, graphite, metals, metal oxides, glass, cellulose, membranes, fabrics, etc., to render the material water repellent, easily wettable, etc. Specific treatments include the water repellent treatment of textiles and the surface treatment of fillers, e.g. to render them more easily dispersible.
