An automobile transmission assembly comprises a fluid type torque converter (3); and a speed change gear (11) providing a plurality of forward speed range drives, including an overdrive provided by an epicyclic gear unit (13), the carrier (45) of the epicyclic gear unit being the input element of the overdrive, and a reverse drive, the auxiliary speed change gear being disposed coaxially with the fluid type torque converter for transmitting a driving force from the torque converter to an output gear (53). A countershaft (55) extends parallel to the axis of the auxiliary speed change gear and a second gear (56) is mounted on the countershaft and meshes with the output gear.
