Defect-free stainless steel slab - obtained by continuous casting with nickel, chromium, or molybdenum coated copper mould

Stainless steel slab with a defect-free surface is produced by continuous casting using a Cu mould of which the inner wall is provided with a coating of Ni, Cr or Mo by electrodeposition. The compn. of the steel follows the relation equiv. >= O and Ni equiv. >=1.04, Cr equiv. -8.29 in which equiv chromium equivalent and equiv. = 30(%C+N) + 0.5(%Mn) + (%Ni) - 1.3(%Cr) - (%Mo)+11.8 Ni equiv. = (%Ni) + 30(%C+N) + 0.5(%Mn); Cr equiv. = (%Cr) + (%Mo) + 1.5(%Si) + 0.5(%Nb). Method does not require strict control of the cooling water, or complicated plating procedures for the Cu mould, which has a long life.
