Smoothing the surface of glass objects - by rotating the object in gas burner flame, esp. to smooth end surface of goblet stem, or base of glass beaker

The glass object is rotated on an axis so that a burner flame impinges on the surface which requires smoothing. The pref. process is used to smooth the end of the stem of a glass goblet, where the angle of the axis of the burner flame is inclined w.r.t. the axis of rotation of the goblet so the two axes intersect. In the pref. appts., a blow pipe carrying the goblet is rotated via a gap formed near the top of two pairs of driven wheels mounted on a frame carrying the motor driving the wheels. The frame has an arm carrying a gas burner used to smooth the end of the stem on the goblet. A very similar appts. is used to smooth the base of glass beakers. The cut end of the toblet stem can be smoothed without impairing the shape of the adjacent surfaces of the stem.
