Surface treatment of polyolefin, polyester or rubber articles - to make them gas-proof and stable to ageing, by blowing or condensing a noble gas onto them

Upgrading of the quality of mouldings of (opt. crosslinked) polyolefines, polyesters, rubber and the like, comprises introducing a noble gas beneath the surface and/or applying it onto the surface of the moulding. Suitable noble gases include He, Ne or Ar which may be used singly or in combination. The gas(es) is (are) applied through a nozzle in form of a jet onto the (surface of) the article to be treated, by raising the pressure and/or lowering the temp. so that the gas(es) condense(s) upon the moulding. The claimed process may be effected before and/or during the melting, crystallising, hardening, crosslinking, vulcanising or polymerising of the prods. Its purpose and effect is to make them superficially gas-impermeable and more resistant to ageing. Esp. suitable for crosslinked polyethylene.
