The piston has a skirt (1) and a crown (2). The connecting rod (7) is attached to a gudgeon pin (3) which runs across the space inside the piston between two sides of the skirt. A thrust piece (9) within the space inside the piston is tight to the bottom of the crown and to the connecting rod (7). Its lower end is profiled to allow the connecting rod to oscillate without losing contact with the thrust piece. The driving force on the crown is transmitted to the connecting rod through the thrust piece and not through the skirt and gudgeon pin. This reduces stresses in the skirt and enables it to be thinner.
