The measuring device is for periodically operated signal pick-ups for testing for completion of signal groups which define the correct thickness of a book or brochure. A control device regulates operation of the binding device according to signals derived by thickness measurement of the page groups. A sensor element is arranged in the beam path of the radiation sources, a reference source and a measuring source. The beam path of the reference source passes through a fault-free page group between it and the sensor element, of the book which is used as reference. The beam path of the measuring source passes through a page group of the back to be measured. There is also an amplifier and a comparator circuit.
