Trivalent thallium values are extractively recovered from aqueous media containing dissolved trivalent and monovalent thallium values by contacting the aqueous medium, optionally in the presence of an alkanoic acid having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms per molecule, with an organic solvent for the alkanoic acid, said solvent having limited solubility in water, to preferentially extract at least a portion of the dissolved trivalent thallium values into the organic phase, and recovering (1) an organic solvent containing the extracted trivalent thallium values and (2) an aqueous phase containing monovalent thallium values and depleted in trivalent thallium values. The extractant can comprise a carboxylic acid or an inert, non-acidic organic solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon, ether, ester, ketone or nitrile. Alternatively, monovalent thallium values are recovered from an organic medium by extraction with an aqueous acid.
|
