Disclosed is an elliptical polarizing plate wherein a light-transmitting protection film, a polarizing element and an optically anisotropic element are arranged in layers in this order. The elliptical polarizing plate is free from problems such as layer separation even under high temperature, high humidity conditions, since the layered structure thereof is simplified. This elliptical polarizing plate is characterized in that the optically anisotropic element contains a liquid crystal layer which is obtained by aligning a liquid crystalline composition exhibiting at least a positive uniaxiality in a twisted nematic mode or a hybrid nematic mode in a liquid crystal state, and then fixing the alignment.
