A process for making citraconic anhydride by the vapor phase oxidation of mesityl oxide at a temperature of 200-500.degree.C. Air or pure oxygen can be used for the oxidation, wherein the molar ratio of oxygen to mesityl oxide is 10:1 to 100:1. Preferred catalysts are vanadium oxide, vanadate salts and vanadyl salts. If desired, the catalyst can be deposited on a suitable support such as alumina, silica, pumice or silicon carbide. Small amounts of maleic anhydride are normally produced in the reaction and can be separated from the reaction product, if desired.
|
