The hollow column (1) for a generator driven by sea or wind power is hinged (6) at its base to support (8) fixed to the sea bed. A float (11) round the outside of the column tends to maintain it vertical. An opening (3) allows water to enter the upper part of the column. A float (2) within the upper part moves up and down with the water level. A rod (5) extends upwards from the float and has a rack (15) which drives a pinion (16) on the shaft of an electrical generator (14). As wind and waves move the column (1) from the vertical the internal float (2) stays on the water line and produces a reciprocation of the rack.
