Pilot light for gas water heater - has outer edge of target shield impinging on outer side of pilot flame for continuous combustion

The pilot light is fitted to a gas water heater, extinction of its flame closing a thermocouple-operated safety valve. The pilot comprises a tube (1) and nozzle (5), the gas jet (F) striking the face of a target shield (4) and covering the tip (6) of the thermocouple. This shield has its contact face at an angle of 30 deg. to the gas jet axis (AA') and has side cheeks (7) to entrain the necessary combustion air. The outer side of the pilot flame impinges onto the outer edge (B) of the target shield for continuous combustion.
