<p>Germicidal compsn. is prepd. as follows: NaClO2 is treated with an H2O-sol. acid material (I) in aq. media at pH 7. (I) may be >=1 organic acids opt. contg. an inorganic acid, but contg. is not 15% by wt. of lactic acid (II). Compsn. has potent broad-spectrum germicidal properties, is stable over a broad pH range, and may be used without the hazards and disadvantages normally associated with known ClO2 germicidal compsns. (loss of active ingredients, volatile toxic gases, etc.). In addn. the compsn is less irritating and toxic than hypochlorite bleach. The compsn. is useful for the treatment of wounds, medical instruments, food utensils, etc., and partic. for use in ultrasonic cleaning appts. (II) is stated to possess pronounced synergistic germicidal properties with NaClO2. In an example, a compsn. contg. H2O, NaClO2 (3000 ppm), and (II) (to pH 3) was effective against a range of bacteria and fungi within 10 min.</p> |
