The rotor is suitable for a generator in a motor cycle. The rotating field system comprises a claw-type pole arrangement connected to a shaft which also carries the cylindrical single coil field winding (5). To provide a key for the winding, the shaft section acting in effect as the rotor core (2) is made non-cylindrical. Typically, the core (2) comprises a series of lobes interspaced by flats over which the coil is formed. This provides a secure drive for the coil.
