<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately detecting a toner image on the surface of an intermediate transfer belt 10 and the image density of the toner image without increasing the size of the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus temporarily advances recording paper for recording a toner image in a first position opposite to the belt surface relative to a first belt area that is in the wrapped area of the intermediate transfer belt 10 relative to a secondary transfer nip entrance roller 14 extending the intermediate transfer belt 10. The image forming apparatus is provided with a sensor moving means for moving an optical sensor unit 150 between the first position and the second position opposite to the belt surface in a second belt area that is within the wrapped area apart from the first belt area relative to the center of the wrapped area in the belt moving direction.
