Process for the preparation of the novel D-6-methyl-8ss-hydroxymethyl-8 alpha -hydroxy-9-ergolene-acetonide

The novel D-6-methyl-8ss-hydroxymethyl-8 alpha -hydroxy-9-ergolene-acetonide of the formula (III) shown is prepared by reacting a D-6-methyl-8-hydroxymethyl-10 alpha -alkoxy-8-ergolene with an acid in an aqueous medium; in the starting compound, the alkoxy radical has 1 to 3 carbon atoms. Thereafter, the D-6-methyl-8ss-hydroxymethyl-8 alpha -hydroxy-9-ergolene obtained is reacted with acetone in the presence of an acid to give the novel compound. The novel compound can be used as a prolactin inhibitor. <IMAGE>
