An apparatus and a method for managing meta data of contents are provided to feely extend and construct meta data by using a tag object and correctly represent the meaning of the meta data. An apparatus for managing meta data of contents includes a policy negotiating unit(120) for comparing a policy set value set by a user with a set value of meta data set for predetermined contents to select meta data, a contents manager(130) for generating the meta data as a tag object and uploading the selected meta data and the contents to a predetermined contents site, and a storage unit(140) for storing the contents, the policy set value and the set value of the meta data.
