PURPOSE:To prepare phenacyl alcohol useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, etc., easily, from a raw material available at low cost, by using a specific bacterial strain. CONSTITUTION:Phenacyl alcohol-producing bacteria belonging to Pseudomonas genus, e.g. Pseudomonas SG9611, etc., are aerobically cultured in a medium containing biphenyl (obtained in large quantities as a by-product of oil refinery) as a carbon source ( and also containing a nitrogen source, inorganic salts, trace of metals, etc.) at 25-35 deg.C under almost neutral conditions for 2-4 days, and the accumulated phenacyl alcohol is separated from the medium. |
