<p>An apparatus and method for generating heat in which a particulate sulfur-containing fuel material and a sulfur absorbing material are passed into a chamber, are fluidized by passing air through the chamber, and are combusted in the chamber. A second chamber is provided which receives the sulfated sorbent material both from the air passing through the first chamber and directly from the first chamber. The sulfated sorbent material is desulfated in the second chamber before being passed back to the first chamber, and the remaining sulfur enriched gas is contacted with granular coal to reduce it to sulfur and hydrogen sulfide. The recovery of sulfur in the above manner substantially reduces air pollution by the effluent gases passing from the first chamber into atmosphere.</p> |
